On September 24, 2026, General Motors introduced a new engine: the Duramax 8.3L Turbo-Diesel V8, debuting on the refreshed 2027 Chevrolet Silverado HD.

If you pull haybales out to the farm, haul a mini excavator to the jobsite, or tow a camper up I-29 to Lake Okoboji, the engine under the hood of your heavy-duty truck is the most important number on the spec sheet.

Here is what we know so far about “the Mongoose”, and what it could mean for drivers across Omaha, eastern Nebraska, and western Iowa.

A clean-sheet diesel V8

The 8.3L Duramax is a new turbocharged diesel V8 that GM designed from the ground up for heavy-duty pickups.

It is much larger than the 6.6L Duramax that Silverado HD owners know, and it is built around the idea that heavy towing should not strain the engine.

The hardware reflects that goal. The cylinder block is compacted graphite iron, a material known for strength under high cylinder pressure.

Inside are a fully forged crankshaft, forged connecting rods, and steel pistons.

A high-efficiency variable-geometry turbocharger, a dual-stage air-to-water charge cooling system, and high-flow fuel injection round out the setup.

GM also worked on refinement.

An integrated intake, an advanced combustion system, and crankshaft isolation hardware are all aimed at cutting noise and vibration, which is welcome news for anyone who spends hours behind a diesel on the road to Kansas City or Sioux Falls.
