If you’re going to the Nebraska Cornhuskers football game this Saturday vs Ohio, this is what you need to know:
The westbound I-80 to southbound I-180 loop, the one that drops you straight into downtown Lincoln, is gone.
Not blocked off for the weekend.
Closed until May 2027.
Now add an 11:00 a.m. kickoff.
Nebraska vs. Ohio starts early on Saturday, September 5, which means street closures go up at 9:00 a.m. and you’ll be feeding into downtown during morning traffic instead of coasting in on a lazy afternoon.
City officials are asking for an extra 30 to 60 minutes.
Miss the 9:00 cutoff and you’re not just late, you’re rerouted.
Here’s the exit to use, the streets to skip, and the window to pull out of the driveway.
The one thing that changed this year
The westbound I-80 to southbound I-180 loop is closed. It shut on August 11 and stays closed through May 2027 while the northbound I-180 bridge is rebuilt.
That’s the ramp drivers heading west have always used to drop straight into downtown Lincoln.
The City’s own guidance for traffic arriving from the east now lists only four usable exits:
- Waverly (Exit 409)
- 56th Street (Exit 405)
- 27th Street (Exit 403)
- Airport / Cornhusker Highway (Exit 399)
The guidance explicitly states that the downtown exit is unavailable from this direction.
Recommended route
Primary: Exit 403 (27th Street). The City specifically calls out 27th Street and the Airport exit as the two with no construction impacts. Take I-80 west to Exit 403, then head south on 27th. For Haymarket and downtown garages, cut west on Vine or on R/Q rather than on O Street.
Backup: Exit 399 (Airport / Cornhusker Highway). This is also the official I-180 detour. Take Exit 399, go east on Cornhusker Highway, pick up southbound I-180 at the Cornhusker interchange, and continue into downtown. It gets you the I-180 approach you’re used to with an extra few miles attached. The Cornhusker Highway construction zone runs from 35th east to L-55X, well east of this stretch, so the detour segment itself is clear.
Streets to avoid
- O Street between 12th and 16th — closed for Project O Street water main work
- North 9th, 10th, and 12th Streets — segments reduced to partial lanes for garage and private construction
The 9:00 a.m. cutoff
Two hours before kickoff, southbound 9th Street closes at the roundabout at 9th and Salt Creek Roadway. That’s the tail end of I-180, right at the stadium. R, Q, and P Streets also close from 9th at that time.
If you’re coming down the I-180 and 9th Street spine, you need to be past Salt Creek Roadway before 9:00 or you’ll be rerouted. Stadium Drive is closed to vehicles from 6:00 a.m. regardless.
When to leave
City officials are asking for an extra 30 to 60 minutes on top of normal travel time. The drive to Lincoln normally runs about 50 minutes. Lots open at 6:00 a.m., and gates open at 9:30 a.m. for the 11:00 kick.
- 7:15 to 7:30 a.m. — leave in this window if you want to be parked before the 9:00 closures and have a relaxed walk in.
- 8:00 a.m. — the realistic latest departure. You’d be arriving into the thick of it with the 9th Street closure already active.
Parking downtown and near the stadium
Pre-purchase through parkandgo.org. Reservations are available up to 30 minutes before kickoff, and it’s worth locking in given the closures.

All city lots are credit-card only, and the stadium itself is fully cashless. Leave the cash-only plan at home.
Think about the exit before you park
Postgame routing matters more than usual this year. 16th Street closes northbound. Northbound 10th between Q and T is restricted to I-180 traffic only. Southbound 10th is prohibited south of Charleston.
A garage on the south or west side of downtown will get you out considerably cleaner than one north of the stadium.
One last check Saturday morning
Run Waze or Nebraska 511 before you pull out of the driveway. NDOT has been doing short-notice overnight work on I-80 in the Omaha metro that occasionally spills into the early morning hours.
