What the Duck? Why Jeep Wranglers Have Rubber Ducks on Their Dashboards

You’re walking through a parking lot when you spot a Jeep Wrangler with big tires, a little mud, and enough rubber ducks on the dashboard to supervise a toddler’s bath time.

Naturally, you have questions.

Is it an inside joke? A secret club? Has the driver seriously misunderstood what a water vehicle is?

Welcome to Jeep ducking, a tradition that turns a tiny rubber duck into a surprisingly meaningful compliment.

And the story behind it is just as charming as you’d hope.

One duck. One Jeep. One very good idea.

Jeep ducking began in Ontario, Canada, in the summer of 2020, when Allison Parliament decided to give another Jeep owner a reason to smile. At a time when the pandemic had made everyday life feel especially heavy, a small act of kindness had plenty of room to make a difference.

Parliament had bought rubber ducks for some fun with friends. When she spotted a lifted, customized Wrangler in a parking lot, inspiration struck: she wrote “Cool Jeep” on a duck and left it on the vehicle’s door.

She shared a photo on Instagram with #DuckDuckJeep, and other Jeep owners began joining in. A parking-lot compliment grew into a tradition that spread across countries.

Some people start a trend with a dance.

Allison did it with a bath toy.

So, what does getting “ducked” mean?
